What fleets to get?

In my new Aeronef project, the first port of call is clearly which nation(s) fleets to buy.  Clearly there is no point just buying one so I need to have a 'home' fleet and a natural enemy and then build up additional enemies over time.

Aeronef lends itself to being scaled up - Brigade Models provide starter fleets for £22 each which can form the base for larger fleets as additions are made.  There are also starter packs at £30 which provides two small national fleets to face off with.

In Aeronef, enemies can be found around the globe - as can alliances (which will break and be re-forged over time).  For example, the official Aeronef timeline shows Britain fighting a combined Franco-German alliance.  However, there's no reason why the Germans (or French) could break the alliance and either fight each other or join up with traditional foes.

The Japanese can face off against the Russians, the British, the Americans and possibly the French and Germans.  The Russians can additionally fight the Americans - over the skies of Alaska for example - there is a great scenario where a Russian 'nef flight arrives in America on a goodwill mission to lessen tensions in the region, heads for home....then comes back to attack the American 'nef base in Alaska!

There is also the option to 'refight' historical battles such as Tsushima (where the Japanese can take on a Russian fleet that has flown half way around the world), Coronel (where German 'nefs maul a mixed bag of British 'nefs - who then get their revenge in the skies around the Falklands!).

The Chinese have no 'nefs of their own but can buy from the other powers (creating - like the Pirates - a mish-mash fleet comprising 'nefs from different nations).  There is the possibility (when I've emptied the piggy bank) of a variation of 55 Days in Peking - where the Western Powers pull together a 'nef fleet to take on the Chinese fleet to save the Westerners trapped in the capital.

As you can see, there is so much to go at...

So - which to go for.  Clearly I HAVE to have a British fleet.  And the initial opposition I suppose must be either German or French.  After that - its open season.

The Japanese fleet is a thing of beauty and I will definitely be buying some of their units - and give them the Americans to fight (Pearl Harbour 1890?  Midway 1891?).

I like the madness of some of the Russian designs as well - and this will give me a 6 way initial scope to create a range of scenarios to fight.

And then - South America, Turkey, Austro-Hungary, Italy ....this is going to cost me a fortune!
